Hard water (heavy in calcium carbonates) passes through resin which traps calcium carbonates. It is softened, that is free of calcium carbonates.  After a while, resin cannot keep calcium carbonates anymore: we need to regenerate. This is where salt takes place, injected by the valve.  The valve also manages the different cycles like wash, salt injection and rinse of the resin.  

Valves are of two types: chronometric and volumetric. With a chronometric valve, regeneration happens at a fix time frame, typically every week, whatever water use. The other type is volumetric and electronic if means are developed to measure water usage electronically.
Electronics with microprocessors allow for adaptation and better information level


This technique disinfects the resin to prevent bacteria growth. The device, fixed on the valve, consists of electrodes making chlorine from the liquid salt. The chlorine kills bacteria. This technique is safe but does not replace regular maintenance with cleaner which acts also on the cabinet.

Proportional brining

This technique limits the use of water and salt to the necessary during regeneration. In case of forced regeneration, the valve will adapt to use the right proportion of water and salt. In a classic softener, the regeneration will use a fix amount whatever resin left capacity.
